What the record says

The strengths and the drawbacks, as the sources state them.

Every line below comes from the source we cite. Where the source did not say, we left it out rather than filling the gap.

What the manufacturer gets right

  • Very wide portion range for dogs: 1/8 cup to 4 cups per meal, up to 12 meals a day, plus a 15-minute Slow Feed mode for fast eaters.
  • Keeps feeding on schedule if the Wi-Fi drops. Only 'Feed Now' and schedule edits need the app.
  • Lid, hopper, bowl and bowl holder are all top-rack dishwasher safe, and the bowl sits in a removable holder so a dog cannot tip it.
  • One owner reported the backup batteries carrying a real outage: 'Because of the backup batteries, I can also confirm that it worked when the power went out' (Chewy review, Feb 2024).
  • One reviewer reports a unit that ran nearly ten years before it stopped connecting to Wi-Fi (Chewy review, Feb 2024).

What you will argue about

  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only (802.11b/g/n required), which trips up owners on modern 5 GHz-only or combined-SSID routers.
  • The hopper is not airtight, so kibble goes stale faster than in a sealed container (ClearPick analysis of owner feedback).
  • Chute-to-bowl clearance is tight. A 60 lb English Bulldog owner had to raise the feeder on a platform to get head clearance (Chewy review).
  • At 24 cups it is the smallest hopper of the feeders here and still needs refilling roughly every three to four days for a large dog.
  • Only a one-year warranty, and the bowl is sold separately as a spare part rather than fully supported long term.

What owners complain about

Published owner reports, quoted rather than counted.

The complaint record below is drawn from the owner reports in the sources we cite. We do not scrape, score or aggregate reviews ourselves, and we do not turn them into a star number, because a star number implies a measurement we did not perform. Where an owner report names a failure, we print it as it was written and we leave it standing.

The owner reviews behind this research were sampled between July 2025 and June 2026. A complaint we cannot cite does not reach the page, so the record is shorter than the number of reviews it is drawn from.

Source: Retailer product page (Chewy) carrying PetSafe's own product copy · read 2026-10-28. Complaint records are published owner reports, cited at the top of each review. We do not count them ourselves.

  • Wi-Fi pairing is 'incredibly frustrating - it's nearly impossible' and the connection then drops repeatedly; the app once showed the feeder offline while it was still dispensing (one-star Chewy review, 5 May 2025).
  • The feeder auto-dispenses when bumped or when the on-unit button is pressed. One owner says her dog was feeding herself and gained weight, and taped the button up (one-star Chewy review, 31 Mar 2025).
  • Random unscheduled meals, then a failure to connect to Wi-Fi or respond to the reset button after nearly ten years of use (Chewy review, 2 Feb 2024).
  • Will not dispense some kibble correctly. With Purina Pro Plan Savor the feeder released 'far less than the 1 cup' specified, and a PetSafe representative confirmed that food type is unsupported (Tom's Guide review).
  • Long-term mechanical failures with limited support: a broken battery clip that could not be replaced, and a feeder that stopped working after about a year with minimal customer support (VSearch owner-review comparison).
  • Firmware and app updates breaking meal schedules, and a bowl that is not dishwasher safe and takes about 20 minutes to deep clean (ClearPick analysis of owner reports).

Running cost. No filters, liners or bags are published for this feeder. A replacement stainless bowl is sold separately (PAC00-15965) and no replacement interval is stated.

The setup risk score

Score 2 of a possible 5. The formula is published on the methodology page.

  • 2.4 GHz only, so it needs an older style network or a router change
  • One-year warranty is the category default, with less cover than the two-year units
