The automatic dog feeders

A dog feeder is a chute, a hopper and a promise. Does the chute clear your dog's kibble?

Filter by your dog

What a dog feeder has to do

The chute is the part that jams.

A cat feeder and a dog feeder are the same machine with different problems. A cat needs a narrow portion and a quiet motor. A dog needs a chute his head fits through, kibble his food uses, and a bowl he cannot tip over. Those are the differences we print.

Three worth shortlisting

One for each kind of dog household.

Each one is on the list for a stated reason, and the reason is printed beside it. The full breakdown sits on the review page, with the owner complaint record and the date we read it.

PetSafe Smart Feed 2.0 Wi-Fi

App-controlled auger feeder with a 24-cup dry-food hopper, a stainless bowl with a removable holder, and an optional 15-minute Slow Feed mode with Amazon Alexa support.

The widest portion range of any feeder we track, 1/8 cup to 4 cups a meal, and up to 12 meals a day. It also has the only slow feed mode, which matters for a dog that gulps. Two catches: the 24 cup hopper is the smallest here and the chute is tight for a heavy, short-nosed dog.

Best for a large dog $107.86–$129.95 1 year warranty dry food only

SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect

Microchip reader, locking bowl, integrated scale

The only feeder in the dataset that handles wet food and gates access by microchip. Three years of warranty and about six months of battery life on four C cells, so it keeps working through a power cut. It does not dispense: you fill the bowl yourself.

Best when one dog must not eat another $194.86–$239.4 3 years warranty wet + dry

PETLIBRO Granary Smart Camera Feeder

Rotary dispenser, 1080p camera, two-way audio

Dual band radio, a 1080p camera and two-way audio, 10 meals a day and 24 months of warranty. The camera and the Wi-Fi switch off on battery, so the food still arrives but you stop getting the picture.

Best when you want to watch the bowl $139–$150 2 years warranty dry food only

What the table cannot show

Three things to read the source for.

Hopper size is not dog size

The biggest hopper here holds 24 cups. That is a week for a 20 lb dog eating three cups a day and three or four days for a large one, on the owner record we cite. A dog that needs two weeks of unattended feeding needs a different machine, and we have not sourced one we can stand behind.

The chute is the part that jams

PETLIBRO publishes a kibble range of 2 to 15 mm on the Granary. PetSafe publishes no range at all, and the owner record includes a case where the feeder released far less than the specified one cup of Pro Plan Savor, which a PetSafe representative confirmed as an unsupported food type. Read the complaints before you buy.

Slow feed is not a camera

A camera tells you the dog ate. A slow feed mode stops the dog inhaling the meal. Only the PetSafe Smart Feed 2.0 has the second one, and for a fast eater that is worth more than video. For a dog on a prescription diet, the microchip feeder matters more than either.

Dog feeder questions

How big a hopper does a dog need? It depends on the dog, and the honest answer is that all four of these are small. The PetSafe Smart Feed 2.0 holds 24 cups, the PETLIBRO Granary 5 litres and the PETLIBRO One RFID 3 litres. The PetSafe owner record we cite says a large dog needs a refill every three to four days even on the biggest hopper here. A 20 lb dog eating 3 cups a day empties 24 cups in about a week.

What size kibble can these handle? Only PETLIBRO publishes a range: 2 to 15 mm on the Granary. PetSafe says the Smart Feed 2.0 takes most shapes and sizes of dry and semi-moist food but publishes no millimetre figure, and the owner record includes a case where Pro Plan Savor released far less than the one cup specified, with a PetSafe representative confirming that food type is unsupported.

My dog eats too fast. Which one? Only the PetSafe Smart Feed 2.0 has a slow feed mode, which spreads a meal over about 15 minutes. The other three dispense straight into the bowl. A slow bowl insert is the cheaper fix if you would rather not change machines.

Will it fit my dog? Check two things. The chute clearance: a 60 lb English Bulldog owner had to raise the Smart Feed 2.0 on a platform to get head clearance, and that is in the owner record we cite. And the dog size limit: the SureFeed is sold for cats and small dogs only, and the maker says it is not suitable for medium or large dogs.

Why is one of these not in the table? All four are in the table. The PETLIBRO One RFID has no dated price behind it, so we publish no price for it rather than guessing. The PETKIT YumShare dual hopper is in our dataset as a cat product and we have not verified that PetSafe or PETKIT sells it for dogs, so we leave it out of the dog list.
